The Loch Ard was an old fashioned wooden sailing ship that was headed to Melbourne, Australia from England. The Loch Ard had 36 crew and 18 passengers on board.

It was 13 weeks into the voyage with only a few days left until they reached Melbourne when there was a huge storm and there were huge cloud of mist so the captain couldn't even see where he was going. When the mist disappeared the captain realised that the ship was way off course and about to smash into the jagged cliffs of Mutton Bird Island. They tried turning back out to see and even putting all their anchors down but it was no use the. The Loch Ard crashed and sunk within 15 minutes.

There were only 6 life belts on the Loch Ard so the Carmicheal family grabbed them first. But in the end there were only 2 survivors. 18 year old Eva Carmicheal and 18 year old Tom Pearce. Tom saved Eva when he saw her floating on some wreckage of the Loch Ard in the bay. Tom got given lots of medals and money for his bravery and everyone thought that the 2 teenagers would fall in love. But Eva moved back to Ireland to be with her family and Tom married another lady that was related to someone that was on the p Ard.

These days if travel down the Great Ocean Road and keep going to Loch Ard Gorge you can see the spot where Tom saved Eva and you can see the graves of some of the victims. You can also find out more about the story of the shipwreck of the Loch Ard.
