At around 4:00am 1878 a dreadful event had occurred. A ship called The Loch Ard carrying 17 crew members, 36 passengers mostly from the Carmichael family migrating from the u.k crashed and sunk near Australia's great barrier reef. The boat was making a trip from england to Australia. It all started when captain Gibbs had the unlucky task of trying to navigate the ship to its destination whilst the thick fog cast over the bay. After sailing for four hours through fog it finally had started to lift, only then did the captain find out that the ship was way off course and they were heading for cliffs and rocks. They tried everything they could to either turn or stop the ship but it was all to late the ship crashed into the reef around Mutton Bird island and was completely submersed within 15 min. All crew members and 34 passengers drowned. And the sailor went down with his ship as well ting him self to the ship. In 1878 it was an honourable thing for a sailor to go down with his ship. Two
passengers survived. Eva Carmichael age 18 and Tom Pierce
also age 18. Eva staid alive by floating with wooden remains from the ship, whilst Tom lay on top of the up turned life boat but he could not turn it over because he could not swim. Tom came a shore first and then heard eva's cries for help and went back out onto the water, with the boat to rescue her. After Tom rescued Eva they both made refuge in a small cave for four days until people started to realise something was wrong and sent out a search party. Many people believed that the two survivors were meant to be together as if god made the event happen to bring them closer but both eva and tom had different ideas. Eva ended up marring a man back in ireland and tom started a family in australia.
